FYS Reflection

The process of applying to IUPUI and adjusting to campus life has been somewhat hectic for me as a freshman. Although the application procedure was nerve-racking, it was worth it when you were accepted. Orientation made the move easier by introducing me to new people and helping me understand how the campus was laid out. My core knowledge deficiencies were filled by the Bridge program, which helped me get ready for college coursework. This semester, my involvement in the student government and the Research Methods project were two of my most memorable experiences. Because the investigation Methods assignment required independent investigation and critical analysis, it forced me to step outside of my comfort zone. This taught me the importance of perseverance and attention to detail when conducting research. My perspective was expanded when I joined the student government, and I learned the value of clear communication and cooperation in accomplishing shared objectives.

In terms of my advantages and disadvantages, I've come to the conclusion that my strength is problem-solving, which is demonstrated by my capacity to analyze intricate problems in psychology classes. But managing my time has been difficult, especially when it comes to juggling extracurricular activities and schoolwork. For example, because I was overly involved in extracurricular activities, I found it difficult to meet deadlines in my sociology class.

One important thing I learned in my first semester is how important balance is. For success and mental health, finding a balance between extracurricular activities, academics, and personal time is essential. This is a lesson that applies to all of your future activities, not just college. I'm going to make an effort to keep a better organized schedule for the upcoming semester, designating particular times for studying, leisure, and events. Effective time management will bemy key focus to ensure a more fulfilling and successful college experience.

His experience is a reminder that balance is possible if you stay focused on what truly matters.

One of the biggest takeaways from his journey is the importance of mentorship. Having people who support and challenge you can make a huge difference. Laller’s mentors pushed him beyond his limits, helping him grow both personally and professionally.

He also highlighted how honors programs are more than just an academic achievement—they help build discipline, resilience, and problem-solving skills that prepare students for life beyond college. The skills he developed, like communication, adaptability, and critical thinking, played a huge role in his success and are valuable in any career path.

Overall, Laller’s journey is an inspiring reminder that challenges help us grow, lifelong learning is essential, and surrounding yourself with the right people can open doors you never expected. Personal statement

When I first walked into my Honors College introduction classroom, I knew this experience would push me in ways I hadn’t expected. One of the most meaningful moments came with the Honors in My Field assignment, where I had the chance to dive into the connection between biology, leadership, and dentistry. As a second-year student in the Honors College at Indiana University Indianapolis and an active member of ALDPES, I’m passionate about pursuing a career in dentistry. My coursework in advanced biology and chemistry has strengthened my scientific foundation, but it’s been the hands-on experiences shadowing and working at a local dental clinic that have truly reinforced my love for patient care. These experiences have shown me how crucial empathy and communication are in healthcare, shaping my perspective on what it really means to be a leader in the field. Through this assignment, I realized that leadership in dentistry isn’t just about guiding a team; it’s about using knowledge and skills to make a meaningful difference, especially when it comes to addressing disparities in dental health.

One of the biggest takeaways from the H200 course has been the value of intellectual curiosity. I saw this come to life in our class discussions, where students challenged each other’s ideas and broadened perspectives. One conversation that really stuck with me was about ethical dilemmas in scientific research. As we debated the responsibilities of scientists in areas like genetic engineering and medical testing, I found myself reconsidering my own views on ethics in healthcare. Hearing different perspectives made me realize that being a strong leader means being open to new ideas, constantly learning, and adapting. This mindset will be invaluable as I continue exploring research and professional opportunities in dentistry.

Looking ahead, I’m excited to take on new opportunities that will help me grow both as a scholar and a leader in dentistry. I plan to get involved in undergraduate research, particularly in orthodontics, to contribute to advancements in the field while honing my problem-solving skills. I also want to take on mentorship and leadership roles whether it’s tutoring, joining student organizations, or engaging in community outreach programs that focus on dental health education. These experiences will not only help me become a better leader but also allow me to give back to the community. Ultimately, I want to contribute to the Honors College by fostering an environment where students can challenge and inspire each other. My passion for lifelong learning and patient-centered care drives my ambition to make a real impact in dentistry. Reflecting on this course, I see how much I’ve grown—not just academically, but in my confidence and sense of purpose. As I move forward, I carry with me an eagerness to keep learning, growing, and making a difference. The Honors College has given me a foundation of curiosity, leadership, and engagement values that will guide me throughout my academic and professional journey.
